Travel Insurance FAQ's

Although worded slightly differently, the questions & answers for this travel insurance FAQ’s section have been sourced from the Post Office website’s Travel Insurance page – Here

What does travel insurance protect against?

Post Office Travel Insurance offers coverage for single trips up to 365 days or multiple trips within a year, whether you’re travelling within the UK or abroad. We also provide backpacker cover for a single trip of up to 18 months.

The level of coverage depends on the type of policy and options you select, which may include:

– Cancellation, trip abandonment, and cutting your trip short
– Emergency medical expenses
– Loss, theft, or damage to baggage, passports, or personal money
– Personal accidents and liability
– Legal protection

Additional coverage options are available, such as:

– Gadget protection
– Excess waiver
– Trip disruption
– Extensions for 45 or 60 days (annual multi-trip only)

Winter sports cover is a must for skiing and snowboarding trips, while cruise cover is mandatory for those taking a cruise. It’s important to explore the available insurance policies and options to ensure you’re fully protected for your travels.

Travel insurance is a smart investment for anyone heading abroad for their holidays. Even in relatively safe places like central Europe, things can go wrong.

Flights can be delayed, airlines may lose your luggage, and tourist areas might attract opportunistic thieves. Plus, illness can strike anywhere in the world, potentially derailing your holiday plans.

While we hope none of these situations occur, they can leave you financially burdened—especially with emergency medical issues, which can cost tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Holiday insurance can help protect against these risks by covering you, your travel companions, and your belongings. If your luggage is lost, although the insurance may not replace it directly, you can claim back the costs of replacements.

Medical cover outside the EU is essential. While the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) offers basic healthcare within the EU, it doesn’t cover all medical costs, like repatriation, or provide protection for cancellations, lost or stolen items. The EHIC no longer covers healthcare in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland for UK nationals.

Even for a UK break, holiday insurance can cover lost or stolen baggage, cancellations, trip delays, or if your trip is cut short.

For our annual multi-trip policies, UK trips must meet one of the following criteria:

– At least one night of pre-booked and paid accommodation
– A stay at least 100 miles from home
– A sea crossing

For policies purchased from 31 March 2022 onward, coverage is provided if:

– You test positive for Covid-19 within 14 days of your trip and are required to self-isolate by a medical practitioner, NHS, or any UK government body.
– A medical professional certifies that you’re too ill to travel due to Covid-19.
– You, someone you’re traveling with, or someone you’re staying with must self-isolate by order of a medical practitioner, UK government, or health authority.
– You, an immediate family member (8), or someone you’re traveling or staying with dies or is hospitalized due to Covid-19.

If your trip needs to be cut short, you can claim the unused portion if:

– You test positive for Covid-19 after leaving the UK and must self-isolate.
– You test positive upon arrival at your destination and are not allowed to continue your trip.
– You, an immediate family member (8), or someone you’re traveling with or staying with dies or is hospitalized due to Covid-19.

Medical and repatriation costs are covered if you become ill with Covid-19 while abroad. You can contact our emergency assistance line, and we’ll help arrange treatment or, if necessary, transport you back to the UK.

While no other coronavirus cover is available under our policies, you can opt for the Trip Disruption cover upgrade for additional protection. This covers missed departures and expenses related to changes in testing or quarantine requirements. This upgrade is available for an extra premium.

For policies sold on or after 31 March 2022:

– If the FCDO advises against all travel to your destination, no coverage will apply if you choose to travel.
– If the FCDO advises essential travel only and your trip is not essential, we will only cover claims unrelated to the FCDO’s advice. This applies even if you’ve added the optional trip disruption cover upgrade. However, you may travel with full coverage if we approve your trip as essential before departure.

Ensure you understand the coverage details. For more information, check the common questions about coronavirus cover and review the full policy wording.

Yes, our travel insurance covers unexpected medical costs, including emergency treatment, hospitalisation, and repatriation if needed. Coverage is provided up to the limit specified in the policy, depending on the cover level you select.

Emergency Medical Assistance:

Should you require emergency medical assistance, our dedicated team is available 24/7 to provide the help you need. You can find the relevant contact details for your policy on our travel insurance support page.

Non-Emergency Medical Support:

If it’s not an emergency but you still need to see a medical professional, you can use our Medical Assistance Plus service. This is included at no extra cost with all new Post Office Travel Insurance policies.

Easily access medical professionals like doctors, dentists, and gastroenterologists via a single online platform, wherever you are abroad. You can choose to be seen at a clinic, in your hotel, or via an online video consultation, all in your preferred language. Prescriptions can even be delivered to your nearest pharmacy.

This service removes the hassle of finding medical help, so you can relax and enjoy your holiday.

We offer coverage for both domestic and international travel. Whether you’re enjoying a break in the UK or holidaying abroad, you’re protected if your luggage or personal belongings are lost, stolen, or damaged while you’re away from home. Additionally, if you need to cancel or cut short your trip due to circumstances outlined in your policy, we’ve got you covered.

Our annual multi-trip insurance also extends to UK travel. To qualify, your trip must include at least one night of pre-booked, paid accommodation, a stay 100 miles or more from home, or a sea crossing.

The UK Government offers travel advice 24/7 through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) website. Here, you can find up-to-date information on whether it’s safe to visit your destination. As this guidance can change at short notice, it’s advisable to check the FCDO website regularly.

Please note that your cover won’t be valid if you travel against FCDO’s “no travel” advice or local government guidance. Always consult the latest updates on the FCDO website or refer to our “Where Can I Go on Holiday?” guide for more information.

Our standard travel insurance policies offer limited cover for electronic items like mobile phones, camcorders and accessories, photographic/digital/optical/audio/video media and equipment, iPods, MP3/4 players, e-book readers, and satellite navigation systems, subject to the single article limit. This limit varies depending on your chosen cover: £150 for economy, £250 for standard, and £400 for premier.

You can add optional gadget cover to your policy at any time for additional protection on your devices. Please refer to the policy wording for full terms and conditions.
